To Sea Beyond
A 36-page illustrated tale exploring talent and potential
through the eyes of one sibling's encounter with mystical underwater spirits.
I had the idea for this story about 5 years ago.
What if having talent were as easy as signing an unspoken contract with spirits? When would those spirits appear and to whom?
I wanted to illustrate something from the perspective of the people who felt like they *weren’t* touched/contacted by those spirits.
Those who maybe had an opportunity to connect but were too discouraged by the “conventional” standard of talent & success to see beyond what they are actually capable of.
I believe that ideas are always floating around, waiting to be actualized and this is definitely one of those projects!
5 years ago, even with all the time in the world, I still didn’t believe that I had what it took to actually follow through with a plan to create something worthwhile and proceed with all the steps needed to actualize it.
What began as an idea for a “children’s book” exploring natural vs learned talent morphed into a more solemn account of what it’s like to feel like you can’t “measure up” to those around you.
My hope is that To Sea Beyond can act as a reminder to those who feel like they’ve lost their chance to follow their dreams that you don’t have to sink deeper into despair— creativity and talent take many forms and you are capable of accomplishing that which you set you’re beautiful minds to.
